In the fifth century, St. Augustine taught that the sacraments are the “visible form of an invisible grace.” Each of the sacraments make use of material elements which, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the prayer of the Church, mediate God’s love, grace, and closeness to those who receive them. Through our faithful reception of the sacraments, we become ever more configured to the Person of Christ and thereby become enabled to bring Christ into our lives, relationships, families, and world.
