Lenten Penitence

All Catholics are expected to maintain the penitential character of the Lenten Season, by prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

Abstinence: All Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent.

Fasting: All Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday, are required to consume only one full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday. Two smaller meals are also permitted on these days, but no food should be eaten in between meals.
