As Director of Liturgy, Derrick oversees the liturgical and worship life of the parish. This entails the planning of Sunday and weekday Masses, the formation and scheduling of liturgical ministers, the coordination of funerals and wedding liturgies, as well as overseeing art and environment of our church. Additionally, Derrick helps Marquette Campus Ministry with some of their liturgical needs and teaches in Marquette’s Theology Department. Before coming to minister full time at Gesu, Derrick was the Director of Liturgy for Marquette University. It was in this role that he came to know and greatly appreciate our parish and was thrilled when the opportunity presented itself to come to Gesu. Derrick is a native of Chicago where he attended Loyola University for his BA in Philosophy and Classics as well as an MA in Theological Studies. He also holds a research masters and doctoral degrees (PhD/STD) from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium where he researched liturgical and systematic theology in dialogue with contemporary philosophy. Additionally, Derrick has experience working in liturgical and other ministries at Holy Name Cathedral and Loyola University in Chicago, as well as in both university and parish settings in Belgium.
Throughout my life, I’ve always had a keen nterest in liturgy and was blessed to be able to work in a variety of settings where I could explore and act on this interest. My academic work has always found its root and inspiration in my pastoral work as a liturgist. I also always strive to find ways to use my academic training to offer formation and food for thought to the liturgical ministers with whom I work. I feel privileged to be here at Gesu which is an especially warm, unique, and faith-filled parish family.
