Human Concerns is a broad “umbrella” ministry and consists of these areas:
The present Human Concerns structure has been in effect at the parish since 2013 and includes the Gesu Human Concerns Commission. The role of Commission members is to see the big picture of Human Concerns ministry; provide updates on the various ministry areas; evaluate and plan for the future; and help to foster cross-ministry collaboration.
Human Concerns ministry is highly collaborative and functions within larger Gesu “goals” and emphases set forth by the Pastoral Council and staff. Human Concerns ministry at Gesu works closely with social justice staff at the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Marquette University Campus Ministry, social justice staff for the Jesuits, and also with our interfaith/ecumenical partners such as Central City Churches, of which Gesu is an active member.
Marcia Isherwood and Peg Flahive are staff to the Human Concerns Commission at Gesu. Marcia is Parish Nurse; Peg is Director of Human Concerns. Wendy Luljak is the present Pastoral Council liaison for Human Concerns. Parish volunteers are active in all aspects of Human Concerns ministry – some examples include serving at the Saturday meal program, providing hospitality at the Cathedral Center Shelter, facilitating Ignatian Spirituality retreats for those who are homeless, collecting baby items for the Women’s Care Center, serving on committees and task forces, contacting legislators on important social issues, fostering our Haiti twinning relationship, and participating in Common Ground and MICAH. If you wish to be involved, please contact Peg or Marcia!
