The inner core of Gesu parish life, the simple worship of the faithful, is found in the Lower Church.
First Communions, joyous Easter Baptisms, and First Masses of many young priests have all taken place
in the Gesu Upper Church.
But it is the daily communicant, the frequent visitor to the Blessed Sacrament and the
children at prayer that are familiar and in harmony with the beautiful simplicity of the five altars
of Lower Church. There is nothing singular in them to distract attention from the services; they are
rather a background that blends in and enhances, if possible, the glories of the Divine Sacrifice.
Altars to the left and right of the main altar in the Lower Church are of grey-streaked white marble,
each having a shining yellow point of focus, a bright gold tabernacle door. The four side altars
in the Lower Church are:
- Blessed Virgin
- St Joseph
- Sacred Heart
- St. Ignatius
In addition to the above altars, there are six more altars - three on the west wall and three
on the east wall of the Lower Church. The altars on the west wall are:
- Immaculate Heart of Mary
- St. Peter Canisius
- All Souls
The altars on the east wall are:
- St. Francis Xavier
- St. Robert Bellarmine
- St. Pius X
The atmosphere of the Lower Church is spacious, but low ceilings and small, high windows
give a feeling unity and seem to bring Our Lord nearer to His people.
